At the 2024 Mobile World Congress held recently, a new technology, 5G-A, took center stage. What exactly is this technology, and how will it change our lives? Let's delve into the mysteries of 5G-A.

What is 5G-A?

5G-A (5G-Advanced), also known as "5.5G," is a further development of 5G technology, aiming to enhance the performance and capabilities of 5G networks. It's a technological evolution based on 5G, primarily used to enhance network functions, increase data transmission speeds, and optimize network resource utilization. It's a mobile communication technology bridging 5G and 6G.

5G-A is Superior to 5G

Although 5G-A is a transition between 5G and 6G, it significantly outperforms 5G in many aspects, such as:

1. Higher Data Rates

5G-A's outstanding feature is its speed. Reports indicate that the maximum download speed of 5G-A will increase from gigabit levels in early 5G to ten-gigabit levels. This means that videos several gigabytes in size, which previously took a long time to download, can now be downloaded in just a few seconds.

2. Reduced Latency

5G-A also excels in network latency, achieving ultra-low latency in milliseconds. Once commercially available, this will significantly reduce data transmission time and improve the response speed of application network devices.

3. Greater Connectivity

With the continuous upgrading of mobile communication technology, the ability to connect devices is also gradually increasing. Although the 5G we are currently using can support the connection of a large number of devices, its performance may be affected in environments with high device density. 5G-A technology effectively compensates for this deficiency and maintains stable connections in the same environment.

4. Enhanced Network Reliability

Through network slicing and other technologies, 5G-A can provide network connections with different service levels, ensuring that mission-critical applications (such as medical and emergency services) operate under conditions of high reliability and low latency.

5G-A uses a flexible and scalable network architecture. For example, technologies such as edge computing push computing and storage capabilities to the network edge, improving application response speed and efficiency.

5G-A Makes Our Lives Better

At the Paris Olympics, there was an immersive XR spatial viewing experience, using a headset to transport viewers to the game in one second. This provided high-definition real-time viewing with real-time game data, high-definition visuals, and low latency, resulting in a more immersive viewing experience.
This XR spatial viewing experience is based on 5G-A technology. 5G-A, also known as 5.5G, is an evolutionary technology for 5G to 6G, with better performance than 5G networks; its theoretical peak rate can reach 10G. Major operators are accelerating their deployment of 5G-A. A China Mobile executive announced at the conference that they would launch 5G-A construction this year, achieving commercial deployment of 5G-A in 300 cities within the year.
