Wang Jianzhou pointed out that TD development currently faces three major bottlenecks: First, the quality of mobile phones is the biggest problem plaguing TD, especially since many mobile phones still cannot seamlessly switch between 2G and 3G automatically, and the price of mobile phones is also high, with the lowest priced TD phone currently costing around 1800 yuan; second, besides video calls, TD lacks classic features, and the differentiated services compared with 2G are not significant; third, 2G users have to change their numbers or use two phones to switch to the TD network, which is why China Mobile is eager to pilot number portability.
How can more than 400 million mobile phone users transition to the 3GTD network? China Mobile's answer is: number portability.
Yesterday, reporters learned that China Mobile has selected Tianjin, Xiamen, and Shenzhen as pilot cities. Existing 2G mobile phone users can switch to the TD network without changing their numbers, SIM cards, or registration. This plan will be fully implemented during the second phase of TD's trial commercial use. Wang Jianzhou, president of China Mobile, revealed to the outside world that number portability is being tested in three cities. After the pilot program is completed, it will be promoted to the current 10 TD cities, and all 28 cities in the second phase of TD network construction will adopt this model.
TD is a 3G standard proposed by China. China Mobile was selected as the operator. Previously, TD has been trial-commercially used in 10 cities including Beijing and Tianjin. The following second-phase network construction will expand to another 28 cities. According to China Mobile's data, as of September 20, China Mobile's total TD users reached 270,000, including 145,000 trial commercial users, 90,000 Olympic-dedicated users including the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee, Olympic volunteers, and Olympic service personnel. In addition, there are 38,000 social test users who purchased their own terminals and enjoyed preferential call charges.
Wang Jianzhou pointed out that there are still three major bottlenecks in the current development of TD: First, the quality of mobile phones is the biggest problem plaguing TD, especially many mobile phones cannot smoothly realize automatic switching between 2G and 3G, and the price of mobile phones is also high, with the lowest-priced TD mobile phone currently costing around 1800 yuan; second, besides video calls, TD lacks classic functions, and the differentiated services from 2G are not significant; third, 2G users need to change their numbers or use two mobile phones to switch to the TD network, which is also the urgent need for China Mobile to pilot number portability.
In fact, China Mobile doesn't have much time left, as two major new competitors—China Telecom and China Unicom—are preparing for fierce market offensives. China Telecom will launch a large-scale "prepaid phone charges for free mobile phones" promotional activity on October 1, when it officially takes over the CDMA network.
